Steno Research is a new macro and geopolitical research house. We are based out of Copenhagen, Denmark, but have an international team and a strong network of sources and partners around the world. The team is lead by Andreas Steno, previous global head of strategy at Nordea Bank, and Mikkel Rosenvold, former chief consultant in the Danish Ministry of Finance.

<ul><li>The recent threats of heavy tariffs on Canada and Mexico appear to be aimed at pressuring those governments to address U.S. concerns regarding immigration and drug enforcement.</li><li>While it’s unlikely these tariffs will materialize, the threat serves as a strong incentive for both countries to take action on closing the border and curbing the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. Trump has effectively imposed a hard deadline of January 20th for these efforts, signaling a stark departure from the Biden administration’s earlier carrot-based approach, which focused on incentivizing Mexico with financial support to manage border issues.</li><li>In contrast, Trump is clearly opting for the stick over the carrot.</li></ul>

<li>Occidental's average realised worldwide oil price is expected at USD 75.3/b, down 6.7% YoY and 5.7% QoQ, largely due to an 8.1% YoY and 6.2% QoQ decline in US prices.</li>
<li>Occidental has committed to reducing at least USD 4.5 billion in debt within 12 months of acquiring CrownRock, having already cut nearly USD 3.8 billion, nearing 85% of its target.</li>

<li>TotalEnergies’ revenue is expected to fall 9.1% QoQ and 17.8% YoY in Q3, while its EPS is expected to rise 6.6% QoQ but fall 19.8% YoY. </li>
<li>TotalEnergies anticipates a decline in downstream profitability due to a 65.7% QoQ drop in European refining margins, though increased gas prices are expected to partially offset lower oil prices.</li>
<li>TotalEnergies raised its annual oil and gas output growth forecast to 3% through 2030. Targets natural gas to comprise 50% of its total sales mix by 2030.</li>

<li>The current "breakout" above 5670 is an extraordinarily weak one, which suggests a false breakout/bull trap is brewing; SPX has spent nearly three weeks above 5670, with zero upside follow-through.</li>
<li>As long as the SPX does not have a weekly close above 5783 we continue to recommend reducing risk and shifting to defensives.</li>
</ul>
