<p>RRG Internet Consumer Activity Monitors (ICAMs) and News Flow - Testing the Ability to Identify Media Bias</p><ul><li>People tend to adjust their answers in telephone surveys according to what they think the surveyor expects to hear and what they have observed in the media. When searching or shopping anonymously online this ‘media bias’ is not as strong.</li><li>We believe that a strong global negative media bias is tainting the results of telephone surveys, holding down measures of consumer sentiment and confusing policy makers.</li><li>We have long believed that large divergences between the RRG Asia (Internet Consumer Activity Monitor) ICAM Index and the RRG Global Consumer Sentiment Index (GCSI) are driven by media bias.</li><li>In this report we put this theory to the test. If there is in fact a ‘negative media bias’ we would expect to see it in the actual news flow. To do this we create a ‘News Flow Monitor’ which provides an indication into the sentiment of the news flow each month.</li><li>Results from our News Flow Monitor highlight the stark change in news flow sentiment seen since the global financial crisis. Interestingly the News Flow Monitor has recently become extremely volatile.  Heightened volatility seen in news flow sentiment is very telling of the current global economic environment.</li></ul>
