Our proprietary software, TMI Machine, is a text-mining platform designed with the buy-side & capital markets professional in mind, text-mining the global media to discern and quantify nuanced qualitative shifts in press coverage as they apply to macroeconomics, equity indexes/ETFs, commodities, currencies, fixed income & individual equities.  TMI provides custom leading indicators and systematic trading strategies, operating at the nexus of linguistics & statistics drawing on vast experience in investment banking and hedge fund settings in senior quantitative and fundamental roles.  

TMI Data Science was founded by Elan Gore, an award-winning Senior Global Basic Materials Equity Analyst & China Economist with 15 years of experience in North American hedge funds & institutional managers; and Alessandro Porrino, Ph.D., an Algorithmic Trading Analyst and Programmer with 10 years of front-office experience ranging from complex FX option pricing to auto-hedging strategies at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Standard Chartered.  Mr. Gore holds an MBA in Finance from New York University Stern School of Business, and Mr. Porrino holds a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from Brunel University London.

<p><em><strong>The presidential debates are usually totems of democracy's best features--as two (occasionally three) candidates lay out their arguments cordially before a national audience. The first debate of the Fall 2020 campaign was anything but a talismanic symbol of American democracy, doing little to change voters' minds. But it greatly heightened the risks of a chaotic November in the US, possibly the most chaotic post-election scenario since 1860-61. </strong></em></p><p>The first inter-party presidential debate of the 2020 election cycle was an ugly tie: there was no clear winner in an incoherent and undignified brawl that hardly aired any of the election's key issues. Trump's abrasive style likely strengthened the degree of support from his base. Biden's uneven performance (a few good lines, drowned in bouts of incoherence) did not enhance his appeal to the wider electorate, but he held his own (thus refuting Trump's suggestions that he is senile), and made no significant gaffes (apart from one false claim about the US-China trade deficit, and a brief defense of the Green New Deal, which he was soon obliged to repudiate). </p><p>President Trump appeared intent on questioning the legitimacy of the election process -- particularly mail-in ballots. Asked by moderator Chris Wallace (from the conservative Fox News channel) to reassure voters of the integrity of the voting process, Biden complied--and made a strong, direct pitch to voters to go out and vote. Trump said the voting process is "a disaster", a "fraud and a shame". When asked if each candidate would wait until a result/outcome had been certified before declaring victory, and would tell his supporters to stay calm in the intervening period, Trump declined to do so--especially if it was "a fraudulent process".</p><p>At this stage, President Trump appears to have decided he will lose the election, and is hence preparing his supporters to question the legitimacy of the election -- a dangerous and unprecedented situation that has not occurred in any election since the 19th century.  November 2020 was already looking like a terrible month for the US, but it has just become much more dangerous, as the sitting president has begun questioning the legitimacy of the entire electoral process. In the 1860 election, the refusal of many states to accept the outcome (a victory for Lincoln) led to a Civil War, as southern states unhappy with the outcome chose to secede. November 2020 will not necessarily signal a Civil War, but is likely to result in an ugly and chaotic month or two in US politics -- uncertainty that will be very negative for global equities and risk assets. The US dollar is likely to gain strength this quarter, as will gold prices.  </p>
