[Japan M&A] Taiyo Holdings (4626 JP) – A Last Gasp of Likely Fruitless Optionality Remains
- The Taiyo Holdings (4626 JP) tender offer was expected to start around now. It is delayed because “necessary procedures and actions” under Chinese antitrust and Japan Investment Approval remain incomplete.
- The latter is a trifle concerning, but I expect this gets done. Earnings will be better than originally guided and in the management forecast underpinning the FAs’ valuations.
- HOWEVER, they’d have to be a LOT better to trigger a re-rate. I don’t think they get there but passive is big enough to make traders Oliver Twisty.
Japan AI Small Caps: Who Topix Funds Must Buy/Sell Following the Oct 30 Index Cull
- JPX’s October 7 review adds 35 names and phases out 683 over eight quarterly steps, creating dated passive buying and selling in several AI and semiconductor stocks.
- Ferrotec, santec, Seikoh Giken and C.Uyemura get passive buying at the October 29 close; Samco, Tazmo, Torex Semiconductor and Fixstars face eight quarterly passive selling dates.
- The October 2027 re-evaluation is an escape hatch: deleted names that regain liquidity stop being cut, making buybacks, cross-shareholding unwinds and float will increase the catalysts to watch.
Sri Lanka Rubber Industry Gains Momentum as Value-Added Exports Strengthen
Highlights
-
Rubber exports accelerate to 9.24% growth in August, lifting January-August earnings 5.51%.
-
Hard-rubber product exports surged 68.26% in August, while glove exports rose 10.71%.
-
EUDR compliance and weaker vehicle registrations pose challenges despite resilient rubber-product exports.
GOLD MINING SECTOR: Comparative Valuation, Share Price Performance & Gold Price Sensitivity
- Valuation: At $4,500/oz, the nine-name median is 8.3x P/E and 5.9x EV/EBITDA; excluding Capricorn (18.6x), the sector prices in little of current gold.
- Performance:Centerra Gold (CG CN) (+56.5%) and Wesdome (+51.8%) lead YTD, while Barrick Mining (B US) (‑6.2%) and Kinross Gold (K CN) (‑16.4%) lag on the lowest EV/EBITDA (3.9x, 4.2x).
- Picks: We like Barrick Mining (B US) for upcoming catalysts, OceanaGold Philippines (OGP PM) for its yield of 10-12%, and Apex Mining (APX PM) for future growth.
Oil futures: Crude eases as additional Russian diesel supplies eyed
- Brent crude oil futures were slightly lower on Tuesday as investors eyed the prospect of additional Russian diesel that would provide some relief to tight fuel markets.
- Front-month Dec26 ICE Brent futures were 0.6% lower at $106.06/b (2103 BST), whereas Nov26 NYMEX WTI was at $94.65/b , up 1% versus Monday’s settle.
- However, both benchmarks rebounded from earlier lows as Iran stepped up attacks on tankers, with at least four more since Sunday evening.
Energy Weekly (W/E 09/Oct): WTI Holds Gains on Hormuz Risk, Frontline Tests Peak Rates
- WTI rose 0.81% for the W/E 09/Oct as Hormuz risks and Hurricane Isaias offset supply relief; rising skew and fund long liquidation point to a short-lived supply-risk premium.
- Energy equities outpaced flat crude, with XLE and XOP rallying and AUM flowing into traditional energy ETFs, while clean-energy ICLN lagged.
- Frontline’s Q3 bookings suggest estimates are beatable after a record Q2, but Middle East de-escalation and new vessel supply threaten tanker rates.
ARG: Q3 Production Beats Expectations; Impressive Cost Reduction
- MVC produced 17.0Mlbs of copper in Q3/26 (+17% YoY), ahead of our 16.2Mlbs forecast, taking 9M/26 output to 48.2Mlbs, or 76% of 2026 guidance of 63.8Mlbs.
- Cash cost fell to $1.55/lb, well below our $2.08/lb estimate and under ARG’s full-year guidance of $1.98/lb.
- This is the lowest quarterly cash cost recorded since we began following the Company.

Morning Market Notes: NYMEX ULSD Makes a Comeback, As Expected
- As we anticipated, NYMEX USLD cracks have expanded once again, at least partly catalyzed by Houthi and Saudi strikes against refining and other energy assets.
- As we anticipated, NYMEX USLD cracks have expanded once again, at least partly catalyzed by Houthi and Saudi strikes against refining and other energy assets.
- As previously discussed, any major escalation could include a Houthi attack on Abqaiq, Saudi Aramco’s critical crude oil processing and desulphurization facility.
